Shirley A. Smoyak, RN, PhD, FAAN
Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services
Editor, Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services (JPN) Since July, 1981
Prior Editor’s Position: Interim Editor, Image (Sigma Theta Tau), 1970-76
Years as Editor: Since 1970
Years in INANE: Since 1981
Other Position: Professor II, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Continuous Education & Outreach, Old Queens, New Brunswick, NJ
Professor of Public Health, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, School of Public Health
Accomplishment: Staying sane in insane situations. Founding the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, with JPN as the launching vehicle (the only such development in nursing).
Best: Once an issue is published, it remains a permanent resource, unlike curricula (which are constantly revised), reports (which are shelved), policies (which are ditched) or gourmet meals (which are eaten and gone).
Worst: Deadlines and cranky authors.Amusing: An author submitted a 500 page manuscript on: The Psychological and Physiological Relatedness of Factors within the Cells of Ameobas (sic).
3 words: Depends on which colleagues you ask.
Strangest request: To take a 300 + page doctoral dissertation and "suggest some articles".
If not editor?: Play the piano better.
Relax?: Sing and travel with the Rutgers-Newark chorus.
